ARTIST NOTES: My paintings are inspired by my love for culture, travel, street art and every day beauty. My inspiration process often starts with exploring home decor stores and cafes. It doesn’t matter where I am exploring everything I look at is going to inspire me. I enjoy exploring places that have different styles and designs. I’m drawn to both the essence of realism and abstract forms which are techniques that can be seen in this painting of the Cuban woman ‘The Cigar Lady’. In this painting I really wanted to showcase elements of abstract realism. The realism detail in the woman’s portrait is painted in a slightly relaxed undone style. By loosely applying layers of paint using brushes and palate knives. This painting captures the beauty of the black woman and the culture of Cuba which is laid back slow pace and a simple lifestyle but rich at the same time.
